Close to Bernhausen, Echterdingen, Plieningen and Sielmingen, Stuttgart Airport (STR) is situated 13 km / 8 miles south of the city of Stuttgart on a 965-acre / 390-hectare site. The airport is home to four terminals, servicing about 400 take-offs and landings per day.
More than ten million annual passengers passing through this facility every year, although its four terminals currently have a maximum capacity of roughly 12 million, making it appear in Europe's top 40 busiest airports. Stuttgart Airport handles in excess of 50 different airlines, being a prominent German hub for Air Berlin, Condor, Lufthansa, TUfly and Germanwings, which fly to many domestic cities and international holiday destinations.

Stuttgart Airport is simple to reach, being close to both Highway B27 and the A8 Autobahn. A number of airport buses serve the region, connecting destinations around Baden-Württemberg, such as Esslingen, Nurtingen, Pfullingen, Reutlingen and Tubingen. There are also literally hundreds of locally run taxis and two S-Bahn train links connecting the airport to Stuttgart Central Station in around 25 minutes, which has train services to the rest of Germany and Europe. On the northern side of the airport, the historic 18th-century University of Hohenheim (Universitat Hohenheim) is just a short taxi ride away and home to around 5,000 students.

Built in the late thirties as a replacement for the smaller Böblingen Airfield nearby, Stuttgart Airport was soon after used by the US Air Force for a number of years, who currently still operate a small helicopter base here. In 1948, the airport was used for commercial flights by the city of Stuttgart and expanded to meet projected demands. After more than 75 years of use, the original terminal building was replaced recently in the year of 2004.
Today, the Stuttgart Airport has all the facilities one would expect of an international airport. These include two banks operated by Reisebank, a post office, ATM machines and other financial services, information desks and a lost property office. Other amenities include a good selection of around 30 different retail outlets and duty-free shops, such as the Albatros Flight Shop, Bon Voyage, Bonita, Market Place, Rall Air Rundflüge, Schuh & Schlüssel, Travel Value and Treffpunkt Buch.
There are also around 20 restaurants, bars and cafés in all of the terminals at Stuttgart Airport. These include the News Café, Presse Bar, the Sea Food Trattoria and the Panorama Restaurant, which offers impressive views and fine dining. For travel information, there are around 30 agencies onsite, while those that have time on their hands make like to consider a helicopter tour of the Stuttgart area. These are available at the General Aviation Terminal and operated by Heliplus GMBH.

Germany's official home of Mercedes Benz, Stuttgart is located on the south-western side of Germany, where it is the capital of the Baden-Württemberg region. However, Stuttgart is far from being an industrial city and instead is filled with many large parks, such as the hillside Weissenburg Park, and plenty of surrounding woodlands. Highlights include the acclaimed Wilhelma Zoo, boat tours along the Neckar River, and the stunning Carl Zeiss Planetarium, which is shaped like a pyramid.
